Note: Compatibility of Zigbee devices may vary, especially for multifunction devices. Some advanced Zigbee products, such as millimeter-wave presence sensors with additional features (for example, fall detection, light sensing, or environmental monitoring), may not support all functions when integrated with Akubela. In some cases, only the primary feature will be available.
Similarly, devices with multiple controllable outputs or zones, such as dual-channel lighting controllers or RGB lighting products with separate lighting zones, may only support a single channel or zone within the platform.
Before purchasing or installing any Zigbee device, always verify its compatibility with Akubela and any third-party integrations that will be used in the project. This helps ensure that all required features and functions are supported.
End-user login paragraph
End users can access their Akubela system through my.ecloud.akubela.com. Installers can access the device configuration page either through the Akubela Cloud or by using the device's local IP address.
Similar to Akuvox monitors, direct remote access to the device configuration page is not supported without a local connection or cloud access.
Adding Zigbee Devices from the Device Configuration Page
Access the device configuration page either through the device's local IP address or via the Akubela Cloud.
Once logged in, click the menu icon in the upper-left corner and select Add Device.
There are two methods available for adding Zigbee devices:
Gateway Scan
The Gateway Scan option searches for nearby Zigbee devices that are currently in pairing mode.
This is the recommended method for most installations, as the gateway will automatically discover compatible devices within range.
Select Device Type to Add
The Select Device Type to Add option allows you to choose a specific device category before starting the pairing process.
This method can be useful when adding devices from certain third-party manufacturers or when you want to filter the discovery process to a particular type of device, such as sensors, switches, lighting controllers, or smart plugs.
Gateway Scan
When selecting Gateway Scan, you must first choose the gateway to which you want to add the Zigbee device.
If the installation contains multiple gateways, it is recommended to select the gateway that is physically closest to the device. This helps ensure a stronger and more stable Zigbee connection, improving communication reliability and device performance.
Once the gateway has been selected, the system will start searching for Zigbee devices that are in pairing mode and within range of the chosen gateway.
Selecting a Device Type
After selecting the desired gateway, you can choose the Device Type you want to add.
The available device categories help the gateway search for specific types of Zigbee devices, making the pairing process faster and more accurate.
This option can be particularly useful when adding devices from well-known third-party manufacturers, such as Shelly, as it allows you to select the appropriate device category before starting the discovery process.
Once the device type has been selected, place the device into pairing mode and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
How to Put a Zigbee Device into Pairing Mode
To add a Zigbee device to an Akubela gateway, the device must first be placed into pairing mode (also known as joining mode or inclusion mode).
The exact procedure varies by manufacturer and device type, but in most cases one of the following methods is used:
Method 1: Press and Hold the Reset Button
Many Zigbee devices enter pairing mode by pressing and holding the reset or pairing button for 5 to 10 seconds until the LED indicator starts flashing.
Examples:
- Zigbee sensors (door, motion, temperature)
- Smart plugs
- Mini switches
Method 2: Power Cycle the Device
Some Zigbee devices enter pairing mode after being powered on and off several times in succession.
Examples:
- Zigbee bulbs
- Certain light controllers
A common procedure is:
- Turn the device on and off 5 times.
- Leave it powered on after the final cycle.
- Wait for the LED to start blinking.
Method 3: Use the Manufacturer's Pairing Sequence
Some devices require a specific button combination or app-based procedure.
Examples:
- Shelly Zigbee devices
- Advanced sensors
- Smart thermostats
Refer to the manufacturer's installation guide for the exact method.
How to Verify Pairing Mode
Most Zigbee devices indicate pairing mode through an LED:
- Fast blinking LED = Pairing mode active
- Slow blinking LED = Waiting for connection
- Solid LED = Already connected or not in pairing mode
If the Device Does Not Appear
If the gateway cannot find the device:
- Ensure the device is within range of the selected gateway.
- Remove the device from any previous Zigbee network.
- Perform a factory reset on the device.
- Start the gateway scan again.
- Put the device back into pairing mode.
Tip: A Zigbee device can only belong to one Zigbee network at a time. If it was previously paired with another gateway, coordinator, or hub, it must be removed or reset before it can join the Akubela gateway.
Adding the Detected Device
During the 2-minute scanning period, any Zigbee devices that are successfully discovered will be displayed on the screen.
Once the desired device appears in the list, select it and click Next.
On the next screen, enter a device name and select its location.
Assigning a location is recommended, especially in larger installations where devices are distributed across multiple rooms. This makes device management and automation configuration much easier.
After completing the device information, click End to finish the setup.
The device will be added to the system and is now ready for use within the Akubela platform.
