The table below provides a comparison of the VPN performance of several Reyee EG routers based on their datasheets.
Important: The Mbps values shown are the VPN throughput specifications of the router. They are not guaranteed Internet speeds. Actual performance also depends on the Internet connection, VPN configuration, encryption, network load, and other factors.

| RG-EG105G-V3 | 8 | 8 | 16 | 8 | 8 | 50 |
| RG-EG209GS | 8 | 8 | 16 | 8 | 8 | 100 |
| RG-EG305GH-P-E | 64 | 64 | 64 | 64 | 64 | 300 |

| RG-EG1510XS | 1,000 | 1,000 | 1,000 | 1,000 | 1,000 | 1,500 |
*According to the datasheets, the VPN account limit is the combined maximum number of accounts for L2TP, PPTP, and OpenVPN. This should not be confused with the maximum number of site-to-site VPN branches.
VPN types
IPsec
IPsec is suitable for secure site-to-site VPN connections, for example connecting a shop or office network to another location.
There is a significant difference in IPsec performance between the models.
The RG-EG105G-V3 and RG-EG209GS are limited to 28 Mbps, while the RG-EG305GH-P-E provides 170 Mbps. The RG-EG406XS increases this significantly to 700 Mbps.
For applications that continuously transfer large amounts of data between two locations, such as CCTV recording, the IPsec throughput should therefore be considered when selecting the router.
L2TP
All six routers support L2TP.
The smaller RG-EG105G-V3 and RG-EG209GS, for example, provide an L2TP throughput of 130 Mbps, which is considerably higher than their 28 Mbps IPsec throughput.
Note: L2TP itself provides tunnelling but does not provide strong encryption. When using L2TP over the Internet, additional security must be considered.
The specified L2TP throughput should also not automatically be interpreted as the throughput of L2TP over IPsec.
OpenVPN
OpenVPN is available on all of these models, but throughput is relatively low on the smaller routers:
- RG-EG105G-V3 and RG-EG209GS: 20 Mbps
- RG-EG305GH-P-E: 100 Mbps
- RG-EG406XS: 200 Mbps
- RG-EG710XS and RG-EG1510XS: 350 Mbps
For applications requiring continuous high-bandwidth transfers, this difference can be important.
PPTP
PPTP provides relatively high throughput according to the datasheets.
However, PPTP is an outdated VPN technology with known security weaknesses. For this reason, it should not normally be selected for a new secure VPN installation based only on its higher throughput.
WireGuard
WireGuard is supported in both server and client mode on all of the routers listed above.
Performance ranges from 80 Mbps on the RG-EG105G-V3 and RG-EG209GS up to 1,200 Mbps on the RG-EG1510XS.
The difference is especially noticeable when comparing WireGuard with IPsec on the smaller models. For example:
RG-EG105G-V3
- IPsec: 28 Mbps
- WireGuard: 80 Mbps
- L2TP: 130 Mbps
- OpenVPN: 20 Mbps
This should be taken into account when choosing the VPN technology for applications that require a higher continuous throughput.
IPsec performance ranking
For a secure site-to-site connection, the routers can be ranked by their specified IPsec throughput as follows:
- RG-EG710XS / RG-EG1510XS: 1,100 Mbps
- RG-EG406XS: 700 Mbps
- RG-EG305GH-P-E: 170 Mbps
- RG-EG105G-V3 / RG-EG209GS: 28 Mbps
Example: CCTV recording over VPN
As an example, consider a customer with 8 IP cameras using H.265+ in a shop.
The cameras are connected to the PoE ports of an NVR. The customer also has an NVR at home and wants to use a VPN connection between the two locations so that the video can also be recorded remotely.
For this type of installation, the VPN connection will carry a continuous video stream. Therefore, both the total camera bitrate and the VPN throughput of the router must be considered.
RG-EG105G-V3
The RG-EG105G-V3 can be considered for smaller installations, but its IPsec throughput is limited to 28 Mbps.
WireGuard performs better at 80 Mbps, while L2TP is specified at 130 Mbps.
With eight H.265+ cameras, the actual required bandwidth will depend on the camera resolution, frame rate, bitrate configuration, image complexity, and amount of movement in the scene.
RG-EG209GS
The RG-EG209GS has the same specified VPN throughput as the RG-EG105G-V3:
- IPsec: 28 Mbps
- L2TP: 130 Mbps
- OpenVPN: 20 Mbps
- PPTP: 190 Mbps
- WireGuard: 80 Mbps
Its advantage is therefore not higher VPN throughput. It mainly provides additional network capacity and supports up to 100 VPN accounts compared with 50 on the RG-EG105G-V3.
RG-EG305GH-P-E
For this CCTV example, the RG-EG305GH-P-E provides a much larger safety margin:
- IPsec: 170 Mbps
- WireGuard: 300 Mbps
- L2TP: 540 Mbps
- OpenVPN: 100 Mbps
This makes it a good balance between price, performance, and available VPN bandwidth for a secure site-to-site connection.
RG-EG406XS
For installations requiring considerably more VPN capacity, the RG-EG406XS provides:
- IPsec: 700 Mbps
- WireGuard: 750 Mbps
- L2TP: 850 Mbps
- OpenVPN: 200 Mbps
For only eight H.265+ cameras, this is likely to provide significantly more capacity than required. However, it offers plenty of additional headroom for future expansion or other traffic passing through the VPN.
Recommendation
For the example with 8 H.265+ cameras and continuous remote recording, the RG-EG305GH-P-E with a site-to-site IPsec VPN provides a good balance.
Its 170 Mbps IPsec throughput provides considerably more margin than the 28 Mbps available from the RG-EG105G-V3 and RG-EG209GS, without immediately moving to the much higher-performance RG-EG406XS.
The Internet connection must also be taken into account. The shop must have sufficient upload bandwidth to continuously send the required video streams to the remote location. The VPN router cannot compensate for insufficient Internet upload capacity.
